and I thought
I wouldn't have to be
with you
something new

When I think about it now, I really can't believe I met Tori Amos!
I mean... Hello?! I met Tori Amos!!

Of course, it was way back when I didn't really know who she was and what an inspiration her music would be to me over the subsequent years, and so (I hate to say it...) but I really didn't appreciate how lucky I was to meet the godess! When I think about it now, and think about Tori's amazing lyrics, her awesome talent, and all those songs which have moved me so, songs like Hey Jupiter, China, Baker Baker, Not the Red Baron, Northern Lad etc...there are so many.... I really can't believe that I met the person who wrote those lyrics, who wrote those amazing musical scores... wow !!
Anyway here's the story behind my tori encounter...

It was a Friday night and I arrived back home around 10pm to find my room mate, Richard, watching "the late late show" on the tv. So we sat and talked for a while, when just then tori came on the show and played winter... (it's still one of my favorite songs!) ...we were both amazed - her whole style of music was so different - no bass, no guitar, no percussion....just the piano and tori's amazing voice. Sadly "Gaybo" (the shows host) didn't interview her... he just let her play and then off she went. However not before she could let everyone know that she'd be signing copies of her debut album in Dublin's Virgin Megastore the following morning.... :-)

So Saturday came and I was on my way to the train station to get the train back home home. I had some time to kill and was just a walk away from Virgin so thought to myself "why don't I pop in and see if Tori Amos is there?"....

I'll never forget it! There was only a group of about 5 people queuing to meet tori !! She was signing copies of Little Earthquakes...and so I guess she was still pretty much an unknown at that time. I got my copy of the album and took my place in the queue. Tori was sitting up on a table up front and looked stunning! Her long red hair flowing behind her. She talked to each person individually for as long as they wanted... it really impressed me! Some people got several copies of the album and were getting them all signed. Others seemed to be talking to her for ages about life the universe and everything!

After what seemed like an age I was next in the queue!!! I was a little nervous and wondering what I'd ask her! It's not every day you meet a superstar! She asked me my name and a little about myself and I asked her about her music and what it was like listening to herself and hearing her songs on the radio. She said she was kinda used to hearing herself in studio and so it wasn't really any different. She asked me what I wanted signed on the album and I said "Oh, just sign it tori amos!". So she signed the little earhquakes album cover shown above!

Even though I was only with her for about 5 minutes, I was really impressed by her. She took a sincere interest in everyone who came up to meet her and would talk to them for ages. She seemed very genuine and at ease, and seemed to be having fun (her legs swinging under the table she was sitting on!) It was only later when I got home home and played the album I had just bought, that I realised how amazing she was. There were so many good songs on the album....China, Crucify, Tear in your Hand, Mother... and her lyrics were so powerful...wow!!

And so started my long love affair with tori and her music!
